Women in the American Civil War

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 5:00 PM

Please join us in March for this talk to honor Women’s History Month presented by Dr. Elizabeth D. Leonard, the John J. Cornelia V. Gibson Professor of History at Colby College.

Women were the backbone of both Civil War armies: they supplied clothes, food, nursing and even doctors, messengers, espionage, spies, and disguised as men, soldiers. Dr. Leonard will tell us the story of women’s support for and involvement in the Civil War, and what their war work meant for the nation’s, and women’s own future.

Dr. Leonard is the author of several books, including her most recent work, Lincoln’s Forgotten Ally: Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt of Kentucky, which won the 2012 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.

No charge. Light refreshments will be served.
