The ninth annual Maine Photography Show (MPS) is calling for entries. The premier juried gallery show of photography by Maine photographers is presented by Boothbay Region Art Foundation and opens for entries on Sunday, Dec. 1. Instructions for submissions at www.mainephotographyshow.com. Submissions for the 2014 will be accepted until midnight, Friday, Jan. 24.

Categories remain the same: color, black and white, student and special theme — flowers.

The student category is judged separately.

All category winners receive cash prizes sponsored by photography supporting businesses and friends.

The MPS 2014 exhibition will take place at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation gallery in downtown Boothbay Harbor from Saturday, April 12 to Friday May 2, 2014.

The juror for 2014 show is the internationally acclaimed Canadian nature photographer, gardener and writer Freeman Patterson.

Patterson was the subject of a 2003 segment of Canadian Television's “Recreating Eden” series. His near death experience and return to health, through his relationships with his friends and his gardens, only bolstered his understanding of life's cycles.

Opening his episode of “Recreating Eden” is this quote: “The primary responsibility of our lives is to be creative.”

Patterson is a popular workshop presenter and author whose publishing career began in the 1970s with the book “Photography for the Joy of It.” Patterson has contributed to many magazines and his images have been exhibited throughout the world. His story has also been featured on CBC television's Man Alive, Sunday Arts & Entertainment and Adrienne Clarkson Presents.

Patterson is currently being honored with a retrospective on his life's work at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. More information about Patterson can be found on his website www.freemanpattesron.com.
