American Legion Post 36

Tue, 05/08/2018 - 7:45am

First and foremost, Happy Mother’s Day Sunday! Last Sunday the Post honored all the mothers who came to our Sunday breakfast with a carnation! Thanks go to the newly reformed American Legion Auxiliary for providing the carnations. Speaking of the Auxiliary, this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., they will be holding their first Auxiliary Craft Fair at the Legion Hall. This is a sold-out event so come and support your local craftspeople. Refreshments will be available.

Last weekend, once again, Honor Flight Maine sent 40 World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C. We had two of our own, Bob Easton and Royal Dodge on the flight. Be sure to ask them about their experiences. WW II veterans remain the priority and at the moment, all WW II veterans who apply will be able to get on a flight this year. Those who apply will be contacted to determine what their health needs may be to ensure those needs can be met. The next flight will be June 22-24, followed by a trip Oct. 26-28. Korean and Vietnam War veterans should apply now. Veterans are selected by the dates of applications. So, while HFM is currently selecting Korean War veterans, Vietnam veterans will be next and again, those who get their applications in now will be selected before those who apply later. Applications should be submitted online. While paper applications are accepted, online applications will ensure expedited processing and notifications. Any veteran not able to submit an application online, can contact the Legion (David Patch) who will assist in the online application process and answer any questions you might have about Honor Flight.

This Monday is our next Post meeting. This will be a special meeting as the preceding dinner will be pulled pork, right off the spit where the pig will be roasting all afternoon at the Hall! All interested in the Legion or the Auxiliary are welcome to attend. Of course, donations will be gratefully accepted. The dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6. It would be appreciated that all those attending the dinner also attend the meeting. No pressure on joining, but applications will be available.

All Veterans! On June 10, the local lobstermen and fishing industry will be hosting the annual Veteran Lobster Boat Rides! The event starts at the Tugboat Inn where the boat assignments will be made. Lots of food and refreshments will be available! Stay tuned for more information.

Spring cleaning? Once again, the American Legion will be having our annual Yard Sale on Boothbay Common on July 21! Same deal as always, a 10-foot x 20-foot space for $20. This year, the American Legion Auxiliary will be having their Craft Fair on the Common at the same time. Stay tuned for more information on those events as well.

Hope to see some of you at our dinner and meeting next Monday at 5:30 and looking forward to seeing everyone at our next breakfast May 20!
