American Legion Post 36

Tue, 06/19/2018 - 11:30am

On June 10, over 80 veterans enjoyed the beautiful weather out in the harbor on board a variety of lobster boats, Captain Fish’s tour boat, and the Nellie G II thanks to our area’s generous lobstermen, Capt John Fish, and George McEvoy. Once again Bonnie Stover and the Tugboat Inn hosted the event providing the perfect setting on a perfect day! Thanks go out to our many merchants who provided everything from donuts, muffins, pastries of all sorts, along with gift certificates and other gifts for those who provided so much enjoyment to our veterans and many of their families who joined them. And, many sponsors who contributed financially is very much appreciated. A very special thanks to our own Phil Chapman who almost single handedly made this whole event possible ... again! Thanks Phil, a Vietnam veteran and fellow Legionnaire, you are an inspiration to us all. Phil was supported by many but I would like to mention Debbie and Daren Graves who were there from dawn to the end making sure all veterans were welcomed, registered, and got to their respective boats. Our culinary specialists Nick Upham, Stephanie Hawke, Jack Brennan, Paul and Louise Gowan, and John Ryan ensured no one left hungry. There was one person who was specifically honored for all her work supporting are area veterans from past wars by recording their history so their service is never forgotten. Sarah Sherman McGrail was honored with a Special Appreciation Certificate from the American Legion and a plaque made especially for her and presented by Phil, Jim Singer, and myself, all Commanders of the American Legion Post 36 past and present.

The next event will be American Legion annual Yard Sale on Boothbay Common on Jully 21. It is now time to rent your space by calling the Legion Hall at 633-4487 and leaving your name and phone number or email David Patch at dapatch@roadrunner.com. The 10-foot x 20-foot space costs $20 and if you need a table, an additional $5. It would be very helpful to have everyone sign up as soon as possible. This year, the American Legion Auxiliary will be holding their Craft Fair on the Common at the same time. For space at their Craft Fair contact Mary Ellison at 208-6066 or email at maryellison68@yahoo.com. Set up starts at 7 a.m. with the “doors” open at 8. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and all the trimmings will be available from 9 a.m. to closing at 1 p.m. Rumor has it that our favorite hamburger flipper, Stephanie Hawke, will be once again ensuring every hamburger is cooked to your complete satisfaction (no pressure Stephanie). And, there might be some surprise food options as well.

We continue to have a great turn out for our Sunday breakfasts. It is a great time to enjoy a great breakfast and visit with friends and meet new ones. Many summer visitors are joining us and it lots of fun to hear how much they love our community. And, of course, your breakfast donations help us support our areas veterans and community youth programs. Our next breakfast is July 1.
