Just in time for the holiday gift giving season, Art at the Grill will host three artists (Jan Kilburn, Will Kefauver and Marnie Sinclair) all of whom have galleries on Bristol Road. The exhibition dates are Dec. 8 through Jan. 27.

A reception will be held Wednesday, Dec. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. to welcome the artists. The Damariscotta River Grill's chef, Rick Hirsch, will prepare delicious hors d'oeuvres for the occasion.

Jan Kilburn is a Maine native and a life-long painter who started to seriously paint in the early 1990s. Kilburn has been using watercolors to show how she sees our world here in Maine, and her love of architecture, gardens, picket fences and coastal scenes.

“Color has always fascinated me and warms my spirit. As a plein air painter, what excites me could be the contrast of colors or the interplay of different shapes, or perhaps nostalgia behind a subject matter; all help to engage my sense of color,” Kilburn said recently. “The glow that is created by dropping color into color, the contrasts between light and dark, the softness of a wash; it is magical!”

Kilburn, whose gallery is the Jan Kilburn Studio, resides in Damariscotta where she paints year-round. She also teaches classes and/or workshops in Damariscotta, at Popham Beach, in Saco, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Will Kefauver’s first love is the landscape and the colors and shapes defined by the changing light. Of particular fascination are the abstractions found in nature — whether in the forms of clouds or the interwoven branches of barren trees.

When Kefauver isn't in the studio, he can often be found in a field or on a rocky beach painting in oils, en plein air. His work depicts the moods of the landscapes of Maine and New England, from the rugged barns and beaches of the Midcoast, to the silver birches lining a Vermont river.

Kefauver Studio & Gallery on the Bristol Road in Damariscotta, features his work and the work of guest artists. He offers instruction in oil and acrylic painting in his studio as well as plein air workshops.

Marnie Sinclair has recently moved to Damariscotta from Martha’s Vineyard and has opened The Sinclair Gallery on Bristol Road. She describes herself as a “process artist,” working in several different mediums, preferring sculpture for its tactual quality.

“Nature has always inspired my art. I find her perfect balance, color combinations, textures and designs especially intriguing,” Sinclair said. “I am an environmental activist and my art often reflects my concern about climate change and how we are living in a non-sustainable way that impacts all life on the planet.”
