Beware of water bill scam

Boothbay Region Water District Manager Jon Ziegra reports there is a new scam directed at water customers.

Water customers here and elsewhere in the state have received telephone calls seeking an overdue payment for their water bill. Threatening water shutoff, the scammer asks the customer to pay over the phone with their credit card.

Ziegra said the scam has been perpetrated in other parts of the state this week, and he knows of one local customer who has fallen victim to the scam.

He said the water district would never call a customer and request credit card information over the phone, even if there were a problem with a prior payment.

“All billing is handled at our office on Adams Pond Road. If anyone has any question about a bill or any phone inquiry about water billing, they should call Ruth Watts at 633-4723, ext. 110 or stop by the District office at 184 Adams Pond Road,” Ziegra said.
