BHYC Junior sailors hold awards dinner

Mon, 08/21/2017 - 11:00am

The BHYC Junior sailors just capped off their ninth week of the summer with some friendly competition against Christmas Cove Improvement Association (CCIA) sailors, their annual Pirate day and the awards dinner.

Our morning sailors battled a week of challenging weather, dealing with fog, rain and heavy winds. None of that stopped them from coming dressed in their best pirate outfits for Friday's Annual Pirate day. While on the water activities were cut short due to cold and rain, the sailors still enjoyed the scavenger hunt throughout the harbor that instructors Caleb Gray and Aidan Clark designed.

Our afternoon sailors had planned on two days of sailing against CCIA in our home waters, but the fog had other plans. Despite the weather, our sailors still raced with CCIA on Thursday, winning this years Battle of the Bay in very Breezy conditions before returning to shore for a BBQ with their new friends.

We capped off the week with our Annual Junior Awards and Dinner. Winners included Otto Schoenthal (Most Improved Morning), Lawrence Lemaire (Afternoon Seamanship), Henry Currier (Patsy Stevens Award - Most Helpful), Arden Carleton (Byron T. Atwood - Sportsmanship), Ella Beauregard (John West - Best Crew), Tyra Pranger (Bowden Award - Outstanding Performance) and Hamilton Barclay (Rudolph Giger - Best Skipper). In addition the staff has added two new perpetual awards in honor of the efforts of long time volunteers Margot Atwood and Andy Holmes, with the inaugural winners being Pippa Schoenthal and Holden Langenhagen.

Although some of our sailors are back in school already, a hearty group of 25 sailors is with us for our tenth and final week of summer programming before we switch gears into the high school season. After that the staff will be packing up the McKown house for the last time as plans are in place to have the new BHYC Sailing and Education Center up and running for the start of the 2018 summer season.
