BHYC’s junior sailing and tennis awards presented

Friday, Aug. 19 marked the closing day of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club’s Junior programs for the 2016 Season. To salute top performers in many areas, awards and citations were presented by Chris Liberti, the Junior sailing director and Larry Rioux, Junior tennis director and their respective assistants. A pasta dinner preceded the awards presentations and season review slide show.

The sailing awards were given to: for the morning program — Most Improved, Hailey Rosenberg; Instructor’s Award, Rodi Mayne; and the Sportsmanship Award, Della Hahn.

For the 420 Skipper: 1st place, Hamilton Barclay; 2nd place, Gabbie Boord; and 3rd place, Samantha Clarkson.

For the 420 Crew: 1st place, Henry Currier; 2nd place, Ella Beaurergard; and 3rd place, Claudia Stedt.

For the Opti Championship Fleet: 1st place, Toby Clarkson; 2nd place, Cyrus Blake; and 3rd place, Bobby Clarkson.

Most Improved afternoon sailor was awarded to McKenna Hopla and the Seamanship Award to afternoon sailor Ethan Gruntfest.

The Patsy Stevens Award for most helpful sailor went to Claudia Stedt.

The Byron Atwood Sportsmanship Award was earned by Holden Langenhagen The John West Award for best crew went to Ella Beauregard and the The Bowden Award for outstanding performance was awarded to Gabriella Boord.

Finally, the Rudolph Giger Award for best skipper went to Hamilton Barclay and Emma van der Veen

The tennis awards for 2016 were presented to:

Boys 60’ Quick start, Peter Thompson; Girls 60’ Quick Start, Hailey Rosenberg; Boys 36’ Quick start, Teddy Henniger; and the Girls 36’ Quick start, Brooks Baker.

The Girls Most Improved Beginner was Lydia Currier; the Boys Most Improved Beginner was Otto Schoenthal. The Master Beginner Boys Single was Nic Berns. The Master Beginner Girls Single was Sadie Smith.

In the Master Beginner class the Boys Most Improved player was Toby Clarkson and the Master Beginner Girls Most Improved was McKenna Hopla.

The Sportsmanship Award went to Valerie Giles and Lily Rosenberg. The Head Instructors’ Award was presented to Laura Chapman. The Best Attitude Award went to Rath Schoenthal, and the The Meagan McLaughlin Award was presented to Delly Clarkson.

Although the summer program is now concluded, the BHYC Junior program is active all fall in operating the High School sailing team, which begins at the start of September and extends into October. Many of the summer’s winners will be sailing in this program as they are year-round residents of our region.
