I know last week I was singing the praises of August, but I had forgotten that it’s always so busy. Why is that? Is it that we begin to realize summer will end soon, so we start cramming in all the things we’ve meant to do? Or is it that we plan so many things in advance for these perfect August days, not remembering how stingily they’re numbered?

Whatever the cause, I was looking over the calendar at work the other day, and I realized that I’ve scheduled myself things to do here for 11 consecutive days during the last two weeks for August. Oops. Who needs weekends though, right?

Before things get crazy for me, I’ve still got a few programs I’m really excited about. The first is Friday’s film: we’re showing Ryan Leighton’s “Walking Home,” which follows a local father and son on their hike from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian trail. Ryan produced this film right here in the Boothbay region, and I’ve been wanting to see it for a year. I’d say it’s going to be the highlight of our summer films series, but our younger patrons have made it pretty clear that last year’s “Star Wars” was hands-down the winner. It begins at 8 p.m., and Ryan will stick around to answer questions afterwards.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, we’ll make binocular stations for eclipse viewing up in the Community Room from noon to 1 p.m. We’ll also watch a few short videos about eclipses and look at a scale model of the earth and moon. It’ll be a fun, family-friendly hour of learning a little more about our solar system.

On Friday, Aug. 18, we’ll show a Nova documentary called “The Sun” as part of our fair weather films series. On Saturday, Aug. 19, we’ll make pinhole projectors for safe eclipse viewing, again upstairs in the Community Room from noon to 1 p.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the Library will be at Set for Success from 1 to 3 p.m. in the YMCA field house. We’ll have treats for kids, programming information (it’s almost time to resume Minecraft Club!), and we’ll draw some summer reading prizes too.

Monday the 21st, we’ll start printing our pets. This program, made possible by a grant from the Gizmo Gardens, will take place over four days from 9 a.m. until noon each day. We’ll begin on the first day by sketching out our pets, scanning the drawings into our computers, and converting the drawings into 3D images. Then we’ll print them out with our new 3D printers. I’ve ordered glow-in-the-dark filament in case any of the kids want their pets to double as nightlights.

On the second day, we’ll wire our pets up. A small motor will enable tails to wag or hands to wave, and LED lights will make for twinkling eyes. We’ll do all of the wiring together because it’s precise but not hard. It’s actually my favorite part of the project.

On day three we’ll assemble all of the pieces of our pets and decorate them. We’ll have time to program them to make different noises or sing little songs, and hopefully make a video or two.

I scheduled a fourth day just in case anything goes wrong on days 1-3, but there’s a good chance everything will proceed according to schedule and we won’t need it.

There is still time to apply to the workshop, but space is filling up fast. Go to bbhlibrary.org/print-a-pet to sign up.

On Friday, Aug. 25, we’ll show our next-to-last Fair Weather Film. That night, it’ll be a documentary about the Maine fishing industry called “Sacred Cod.”

Then I think I’ll take Saturday the 26th off and sleep all day. Or maybe read one of the nearly-overdue books piling up on my nightstand.
