Am I the only slacker parent who didn’t know that the BRES students have Thursday, Friday, and Monday off this week? And therefore doesn’t have a plan for them?

I guess that means movie time! Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6 at noon we’ll set up the big screen in the upstairs Community Room and show a film and enjoy some snacks (movies TBD, but will be rated PG or G).

I was just feeling so organized and on top of things, too. I was going to write this column about all of the things we have planned for the month, so all of us organized people could put the dates on our calendars, and show up on time for fun and enriching activities.

Well, anyway, here’s the rest of the programming for the month.

The Library will be partnering with the Sea and Science Center at the Railway Village for the Fall Foliage Festival, on Saturday, Oct. 7. Together at the Railway Village, we will run the children’s area from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. We’ll decorate mini gourds and oyster shells, read books, and paint faces. We’re also excited to welcome children’s performer Judy Pancoast for two performances. Pancoast will perform on the main stage at 11 a.m. and again in the children’s area at 1 p.m.

The next thing we’ve got planned is pumpkin painting on our lawn on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. until noon. The rain date for pumpkin painting is Saturday, Oct. 28. Paint and pumpkins will be provided -- many thanks to our co-sponsor, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, for once again donating the pumpkins!

For the first time this year, the Library will be at the Railway Village for the Ghost Train 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28. We’ll set up inside the big old barn next to the toy store with music, dancing, stories, and maybe even a Halloween cartoon. It’ll be fun but not spooky, so that kids who don’t care for frights can have a place to party.

If you do like Halloween frights, the Library has got that covered too. We’re hosting author P.G. Smith on our lawn at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. He’ll read aloud from his novel “Prayers for Evil.” Light refreshments will be served, and copies of the book will be available for purchase. Bundle up, it should be chilly!

Finally, there’s the annual Halloween parade.

As we do every year, we’ll start the parade on our lawn at 4 p.m. sharp on Halloween day, loop through the Bath Savings parking lot, and march straight down Townsend Avenue. Local businesses hand out candy, but any folks who want to see the kids are welcome to find a spot along the parade route and bask in their cuteness. You’re welcome to hand out candy, too, but of course you don’t have to.

    Happy October!
