Rotary and Chamber of Commerce celebrate local artists. In partnership with the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, over 80 supporters of Rotary and the Chamber celebrated local artists who placed their art on exhibit at the Rotary Clubhouse. The Thursday, May 3 event served as the kick-off to a multi-year exhibition by artists who have agreed to share their works with the many persons who utilize the Rotary clubhouse. Selective works by all of the artists will remain on exhibition for the month of May followed by individual artists’ exhibits throughout the year. The 2018-2019 artists include John Butke, Steve Demeranville, June Elderkin, Helen Farnham, Bob McKay, Lynn and John Seitzer, Sally Giddings Smith, and Tony van Hasselt. Rotarian artists Ann Hedgcock, Annette Stormont and Doug Harley joined the fun and displayed their artistic works. The goal of the exhibit is to promote sale of art by local artists and to beautify the Clubhouse in order to bring in additional rental revenue for needed community services. The co-chairs of this celebration were Patricia Royall of the Chamber and Sandra Blake Leonard of Rotary.

Rotary collaborates with Community Center: The Rotary Clubhouse of Boothbay Harbor was the festive venue for the third annual Kentucky Derby Party to benefit the Community Center. Funds raised will be allocated to the Center, a multi-generational gathering place for people who live, work, and visit the Boothbay peninsula. Debbie Graves, Rotary chair, and Jane Good combined their efforts along with Rotarian Shawn Lewin, president of the Center.

Over 80 party goers enjoyed a wide variety of volunteer-supplied refreshments, from Southern style ham biscuits and marinated shrimp to roast beef roll-ups and nibbles of all sorts. Pecan pie bites, cookies and brownies finished off the offerings. Mint juleps as well as other libations were also enjoyed by the capacity crowd. But the real stars of the evening, in addition to the all-important race, were the hats! Roses, race horses and even a giant crab adorned the creations sported by the ladies, and the men wore their best Derby attire as well ... bow ties, plaid jackets and colorful trousers!

There were many silent auction items for bidding donated by local businesses and individuals. Those who had boned up on the horses racing were happy to choose their winner by dropping tickets into the appropriate baskets, and the winning ticket was drawn from the basket of the winning horse. The Grand Prize was a dozen red roses and big basket of Kentucky items, along with a gift certificate to a local restaurant.

The Rotary Club of Boothbay Harbor is proud to host this community event and thanks the many volunteers who made this event a great success!
