Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

Howard Singer, a longtime member and avid sailor, has passed away and left many fond memories behind. Howard was equally proud of his Texas heritage and his strong attachment to the Boothbay Region and BHYC. He raced and cruised in his distinctive green sailboat, Marnie, and held down the same spot in our mooring field almost forever. Your author vividly remembers the night I sat on Gypsy Bear during a fierce lightning storm when Marnie was hit with a strong strike and we saw the sizzle go down the mast and into the entire wiring system of the boat. We thought that Marnie would not sail again but Howard persevered and got his boat back in action and better than ever. Sail on good friend.

It is hard to think about winter but the Lunch Bunch is already making plans for where to eat and play Mah Jongg. The word is that lunch will be at Le Garage in Wiscasset after the club dining room closes.

Speaking of dining room closures, the club will be closed for a private event on Saturday, Sept. 24 and then will close with the Decommissioning at 1700 followed by the Gala Closing Buffet on Sunday evening. This is always a stirring event and certainly one not to be missed.

But just because many formal events have ended don’t stay away because thru Thursday, Oct. 6 we will still be having many competition events plus the Thursday Cocktail Parties and Friday night the 7th will be the closing Potluck Supper.

Launch service concludes Sunday evening and we all owe a strong vote of thanks to Ron, Paul and Jim who have been loyal prompt and attentive to our needs all summer long. See you next summer guys!

Look elsewhere in the Register for details of an exciting Regatta last weekend in Northeast Harbor. Our High School Sailing team finished second against statewide competition and the finish included two races won by our sailors. In case you will be around and interested , BHYC will host a Regatta on the Penn Bay Series on Oct. 1, our first ever home Regatta. Charles is excited about our prospects.

And BHYC racing continues to flourish according to this release just submitted by Charles Barclay: The Fall Regatta Series continued at Boothbay Sunday, Sept. 18, with another victory by Jeff Curtis' Silkie over two other J-80's, two Boothbay Harbor One Designs and a C420.  Six boats in total raced under cloudy to clearing skies with 8-14 knots of wind.  Windward-Leeward and triangle courses were set in the harbor for some beautiful fall racing.

This was the third of the three weekends of sailing at Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.  Next weekend, Silkie and Bill Hunt's Firebolt travel to Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire for the J-Jamboree and NH State J-80 Championships.

Silkie won 3 of 4 races, while Jon Dunsford's Bittersweet BHOD won one race.

The competitors made it a family affair aboard Firebolt with Bill and Heidi Hunt and two daughters aboard, Silkie with Boothbay Region Sailing Club (BRSC) Skipper Gabriella Boord at the helm for two races, brothers Bobby and Toby Clarkson sailing with Deanna Clarkson aboard Osprey.  BRSC crew Nate Rideout trimmed aboard Cathy Latta's Blue Skies, and the BRSC duo of Ella Beauregard and Hamilton Barclay got out on the trapeze of their C420 Ella and made a show of it, coming in close behind the J80's.

The Fall Racing Series is the first of its kind at Boothbay and will be revised and improved in 2017.
