This will be about the busiest fall BHYC has experienced for many years! First, and maybe foremost, action has started on the new Sailing Center building. All of the early stage moments are including protective fencing, disconnecting water and power, and parking preparations. Not to mention the backhoe and trucks which will quickly be followed by the demolition of the McKown House. Lots to see and supervise and be patient with the parking restrictions and changes.

There will shortly be drilling and blasting as the crews from Maine Modular prepare for footings, foundations, and concrete floors for the lower level. Hopefully, by the time the first snow flies, we will have all of the basic foundation work done and quickly thereafter the carpenters will arrive to build the ground level rooms and then the northern end of the building which will feature the events room and  vaulted ceiling.

Contractors will not be the only workers as we will need members help for both of the work days. (Oct. 13 and 14) from 8 a.m. to noon. No potluck supper this year because the kitchen has been scrubbed clean and put to bed for the winter. Next year we will be able to have potluck suppers in the Sailing Center  there is a large winterized room for such events .

On the waterfront there are still 20 boats in the drink including two J-22s which may well be available well into November. This also includes the opportunity for sailing lessons and keelboat courses. Info on all of this can be secured from Charles Barclay.

Charles will also be filing a story of the High School sailing team’s visit to the C420 championships in Bellport, New York. Our team fared well but the weather conditions were almost violent. Twenty to 28 mph winds, multiple capsizes including many whose masts got stuck in the bottom of the shallow race course.

The team will be hosting the final Penn Bay race event in our waters Oct. 15. We do need several volunteers from the membership to help manage these races. Call Charles to sign up.

Ladies, remember that the weekly lunch bunch and table games are now being held for the winter at Sarah's in Wiscasset. This is still another event which next year can be held in the sailing center rooms all winter.

Last item — please get out your costumes and mark your calendars for the world famous Halloween Party at the Greenes’ on Southport  Oct. 17. You don't really need a costume, just bring yourselves, your libation, and something nibble to share with everybody and don't forget that Claudia is famous for her decorations and ambiance.
