It was there and then it was gone — and a short time later the drillers and blasters were there and preparing for the replacement. I am talking, of course, about the McKown House and its replacement — the club’s new sailing, education, and office center. The team from Maine Modular in Waldoboro is handling the project and it is, of course, right there and easy to see for all interested members. For those who are now away and can’t visit in person we will keep you posted with a weekly commentary and will post pictures from time to time on the website.

The most current information is that blasting and excavation will continue until the site is ready for forms, footings, and foundation walls to be set and poured. Once the concrete has set (21 days is the common curing time), the “basement floor” will be framed out and things made ready for the building to come. Part of it is “stick built” on site by the contractor and the office and “house” section will come in modular units to be placed by crane and joined together.

None of this has stopped the High School sailing team and, in fact, Sunday’s dense fog did not stop our hosting of the BHYC HS Regatta. Hamilton Barclay and Ella Beauregard finished first in their division, Team Nate (Rideout and Graves) took second  in theirs and Henry Currier, Liam Cullina, and Toby Clarkson also manned their 420s in combat. What a fantastic season these young folks have had. It was typical Maine as things wrapped up ... thicka fog and then a building wind for a wrap up. Thanks also to Coach Charles who somehow found time to handle this program even while working as club manager.

The J-22s  are still in the water, a few members boats still grace the mooring field and we have seen young Henry Currier providing launch service to his family by rowing out daily to their mooring.

The two Work Days are over and much was accomplished including the standard “Clean it up put it away” items and some special new pieces caused by the loss of the McKown House storage area (temporarily). This included wrapping all of the trophies and getting them off to secure winters storage  spots. Also of import is the painting and spruce up of the Pond House. Started by Hristo and picked up by Sandy Wheeler and Lee Rowan, the building is taking on a new face of glory. This  past club year the old house has seen more effective and complete use than ever before since its purchase. In fact, back in the purchase days, there was talk  by some that it would never find enough use to justify the financial investment. Wrong!

Tuesday was the Greene’s spectacular Halloween Party and the many folks who gathered there were grateful to Claudia for the effort she always makes in our behalf . PC Louise asks me to notify you that the next event in the “winter series” is Nov. 16 ( Thursday) at Rosalie Baker’s home.
