Boothbay Region Special Olympians compete in basketball and swimming

The Boothbay Region Special Olympic teams traveled to the University of Maine in Orono on April 9 to compete in the Central Maine Tourney and Skills basketball competition. There were 22 teams and 164 skill athletes.

The students played in their double elimination final games against Hampden-Winterport. The student team, with members “Piper” Rankin, Valerie Giles, Vincent Giles, Grace Giles, Amber Hyson, Isaac Pray, Kelsey Hoyle, Zander Blake and Bobby Edwards, lost Game 1, 18-12. Valerie was high scorer with 6 points, Isaac put in 2 as well as doing a fine job controlling the boards, and Amber Hyson scored 2. In game 2 of the double elimination final, the score was 24-20 with Boothbay losing for the second time. It was tough loss. Amber and Isaac were high scorers with 6 points each, while Valerie had 4 points and Bobby and Kelsey scored 2 points each. The team played very well together and has hopes for next year. The team, when all was calculated, came away with the silver medal.

The skills athletes were: Blake Chadwick, who won a bronze; Lucian Stoddard, who won a silver; Anthony Angelico won a sixth, and Coyle Lawler won a gold. They came home very proud of their work.

The adults played in game 1 the Beckett Bombers, losing 32-8. It was very hard, especially getting by the 6-foot-8 pop them in, throw them in, rebound them in, forward player. When he was standing beside forward guard Ronda LeConte, at 4-foot-7, it looked nearly impossible. Joey Ranco, Matt Farnham, and Danny Miller all scored.

Next in the finals the adults played the C.W.C. Panthers losing that game by a hair, 10-8. Ronda scored 6 points and Joey scored 2.

Area swim meet and state meet

The Boothbay Region Special Olympics swimmers traveled to Bowdoin College April 6 for their Sagadahoc-Lincoln area swim meet, and eight days later to Bates College on April 13 for the state meet.

Area meet results were: 17 firsts, 15 seconds, 5 thirds, 6 fourths, 1 fifth and 4 sixths.

Isaac Pray won a first for his 50 backstroke. Valerie Giles won a first for her 50 freestyle and Joey Ranco won a first for his 25 fly. Blake Chadwick won a first in his 25 free and Coyle Lawler won a first for his 25 flotation. “Piper” Rankin won a second in his 50 free.

At the state meet we came back with 19 golds, 13 silvers, 8 bronzes, 4 fourths, 2 fifths and 1 eighth

We swam like fish and flew like a super jet plane. All athletes swam well and Valerie broke her personal best for the fly.
