Sweet! This year’s annual Gingerbread Spectacular opens tonight.

Local gingerbread contractors are delivering and installing their creations in the festively decorated Opera House.

The Boothbay Register’s entry of the Empire State Building and King Kong (baked by Danielle Driscoll) was delivered by designer and lead contractor Mike Marr. Assisting Marr, in regulation hard hats, were co-workers Mike Scarborough and Bill Pearson.

This gingerbread scene is complete with airplanes, spectators — several bearing a strong resemblance to “Mr. Bill” of Saturday Night Live fame — a Christmas tree atop the mighty skyscraper and a military tank (in memory of the late Dave McKown).

Marr reported all permits had been obtained, but construction delays and overruns made final preparations a tad “touch and go.”

Empire State building materials included 8 lbs. of confectioner’s sugar, 4-1/2 lbs. of brown sugar, 10 lbs. of flour, 10 eggs and approximately one quart of molasses.

Other awesome gingerbreads spied in position for the evening’s gala event included a Troll House by the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, a replica of the Wilson Memorial Chapel, a fairy tale house by Patricia Moroz, and an igloo.

The Gingerbread Spectacular officially opens Saturday, Dec. 13 through Sunday, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

The Gingerbread Spectacular entertainment lineup on Saturday includes pianist Kevin Kiley at 11 a.m., singer-songwriter Mark Phillips at 12:30 p.m. and the Community Band at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, Melissa Nein’s YMCA dancers perform at 1 p.m. and the Y-Arts Chorus with theater jazz dancers and soloist Emily Mirabile at 2 p.m.
