A fine defensive showing and a successful transition offense by the sixth-seeded Boothbay Region Seahawks Thursday night propelled them past the visiting and 11th-seeded Telstar Rebels, 76-50, and on to the quarterfinals of the Class C South tournament.

Boothbay, which lost to Telstar in Bethel earlier this season, jumped out to an 11-0 lead after five minutes and led after one quarter, 22-10. Telstar kept it close in the second quarter but still trailed at the half, 38-25. The Seahawks blew the game wide open in the third quarter, as they led by as many as 26 points. Going into the fourth quarter, Boothbay led 58-38. Telstar had trouble penetrating to the basket and settled for shooting several three-pointers. Boothbay scored on several fast break points the whole game.

The Seahawks got balanced scoring from four starters. Junior Eli Gudroe and senior Carter Babcock each scored 15 points, followed by senior Jacob Leonard with 14 and junior Kyle Ames with 13.

Jarrett Bean led Telstar with 20 points, followed by Tanner Wheeler with 15.

Boothbay (12-7) will now face Madison (15-3) on Monday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center. The teams split their games this year with each team winning at home.
