BRRDD to charge more for shingle disposal

20 percent increase begins Oct. 1

It’s going to cost more to recycle shingle debris at the Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District. Directors voted Aug. 9 to increase disposal costs for shingles from $80 to $100 per ton beginning Oct. 1. The price increase is a result of higher tipping fees charged by Commercial Paving and Recycling Center in Scarborough, according to BRRDD Operations Manager Steve Lewis.

Commercial Paving recently increased its tipping fees from $48 to $58 per ton. Commercial Paving grinds up the shingles and recycles it into asphalt. Refuse district officials approved a fee increase to avoid losing money in transporting shingle debris to Scarborough.

“When you factor in the transportation costs it costs us money to recycle. With the increase, we should make a little bit, maybe a dollar or two per ton,” he said.

Despite the rate increase, recycling is still cheaper than disposing shingling refuse into the open top containers. Non-recyclables are charged $120 per ton disposal costs.

“It’s still cheaper to recycle. $20 is still a pretty good incentive,” Lewis said.

The BRRDD will meet next at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 in the Boothbay district office.
