A Celtic Day journey with St. Columba

Tue, 07/25/2017 - 8:30am

Come away for a summer day of retreat on Friday, Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as we explore Celtic Christianity and the 6th-century life of St. Columba (Colmcille is his Irish name). The retreat will be held at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.

St. Columba was a founding abbot of the famous monastery on the island of Iona in Scotland.  What led him to leave Ireland and cross a turbulent sea to this small Scottish island? What inspired his vision when he arrived? What spiritual practices do the lives of the saints inspire in us today? Using scripture, prayer, poetry, original historical texts and silence, this retreat day centers around the life of Columba in the context of Celtic Christianity.

While all saints are human, what spiritual practices do the lives of the saints inspire in us today? Using scripture, prayer, poetry, original historical texts and silence, this retreat day centers around the life of Columba in the context of Celtic Christianity.

The Very Rev. Jeanne Finan will lead our retreat and serves as the dean and rector of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, Vermont. She studied Celtic Christianity at the University of Wales in Lampeter, including a residency on Iona. She is the author of the book, “Remember Your Baptism: Ten Meditations” (Cowley Publications).

Dean Finan will also be preaching and presiding at All Saints by-the-Sea Summer Chapel on Sunday, July 30 and Sunday, Aug. 6.

Suggested free will donation for the retreat is $15. Box lunches will be provided for those who register. Due to a severe onion allergy for one in the group, we ask that no cooked or raw onions be brought into the church at any time on Friday, Aug. 4.

St. Columba's Church is fully accessible by ADA standards. All are welcome.
