Christmas comes to Gregory Wing

Mon, 12/29/2014 - 8:45am

Amid festive Christmas decorations, music and song delivered by Fay Christy on the piano, and delicious baked goodies prepared by Amy Ronan and her staff at the Village, the residents of the Gregory Wing gathered together on Dec. 18 to celebrate the Christmas season.

It was evident to all who visited that day that the staff and volunteers who regularly work in this long term care facility have a compassionate commitment to serve the seniors in residence and their families in the best possible way.

Two particular volunteers work extra hard this time of the year to help make the season bright for the residents, many of whom do not have the benefit of having family nearby.

Kathy Barter and Betty Goulette, with funding from the St. Andrews Auxiliary, shop for gifts and enlist the help of other staff and volunteers to wrap and then personally deliver gifts to each resident during the party. Kathy and Betty, along with Activities Director Jerie Phinney, and other volunteers, assist each senior with the unwrapping of items chosen specifically for their individual needs and wishes.

Kathy and Betty have had a hand in this long established tradition for at least the past four years and they encourage others to get involved.

In addition to Gregory Wing gifts, the auxiliary also sets aside money for the purchase of a group Christmas gift to be given to Safe Havens. This year Auxiliary Volunteer Chairman Leslie Cook purchased Arts and Crafts materials to assist the unit in keeping the residents engaged in “hands on” activities.
