Clifton N. Rice

Clifton N. Rice, 82, born in East Boothbay and most recently from Westport Island, died July 3, 2017. Cliff was a professional engine mechanic and a skilled woodworker.

Cliff’s parents were Carl and Helen (Woodward) Rice. He was the fifth of 10 children.

Cliff, “Red,” graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1953. After high school, he worked at Rice Brothers Shipyard and next joined the Army. Upon discharge, he returned to the Boothbay region. In 1962, he was awarded the State of Maine “Certified Inspection Mechanic” certificate.

Cliff moved to California in the 1960s and shortly met Peg, his wife of 50 years, and became a stepfather. There he owned a gas station and garage.

After 20 years, Cliff and Peg moved to Westport Island. Cliff worked at Bath Iron Works for 20 years and had become a team leader. Upon retirement, Cliff joined the Newcastle Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth dealership.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Peg (Phillips) Rice; his stepsons, Joel and Craig Hudson; Craig’s wife, Janet, and their children, Page and Amy; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is missed by his special mini mixed pooch, “Pixie.” He is also survived by his younger sister, Janice (Rice) Grant. Nieces Laurie Creamer and Rhonda LaVallee were incredibly supportive of Cliff and Peg. He will be greatly missed by special friends, Jerry Bodmer and Janna Day.

Cliff was predeceased by his brothers Weston, Gordon, Harland, Louis, John, Preston, and sisters, Betty and Barbara. Many beloved mini pooches predeceased Cliff.

Cliff was always focused, goal oriented and hard working, yet always remained kind, funny and fun loving.

A celebration of life will be announced.
