Boating Course
Lincoln County Adult Education is offering America's Boating Course beginning Tuesday, April 4 from 6:30-8:30 for seven weeks at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta. This course meets the requirements of most states for a recreational boating license. Learn the basics of boating: rules of the road, navigational lights and buoys, use of compass for bearings, marine charts and introduction to piloting. Books are included. Course instruction will be provided by certified Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron instructors. Course fee: $94. Save $5 by registering online using promo code.
Secrets of Successful Independent Publishing
Recent innovations in the rapidly changing technology in printing have created a boom in self-publishing. Options for publication, which authors and aspiring authors may not have thought about before.
Independent writers now have a whole new way of producing and marketing their books. This workshop will outline some of the options - both traditional and nontraditional - including what is offered locally. Learn how to get needed technical assistance and about the types of organizations working with Maine authors. Instructor Jane Karker is owner and president of Maine Authors Publishing and Cooperative and Custom Museum Publishing Inc., with over 20 years of experience in the printing industry.
The workshop will be held at Great Salt Bay School, Thursday, April 13 from 6:15-8:30 p.m. The cost is $24 for those who register online by April 4 using the promo code screen - $29 for all other registrations.
Culinary classes - April 6 and 12
Lebanese cooking with Stonewall Kitchen Cooking Instructor, Chef Chris Toy for a one night course, Thursday, April 6 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Nobleboro Central School. Those who find whole grains, vegetables, and seared chicken seasoned with garlic, olive oil and lemon juice, along with a rich dessert flavored with orange and rose water appetizing will not want to miss this class. Participants will learn how to prepare lentils with saffron rice and caramelized onions, chicken shish tawook with roasted vegetables, yogurt soup with dumplings, and a special Lebanese pistachio ice cream. The class is $34 (inclusive of food costs) when registering online by March 30 using the promo code EARLYBIRD. After March 30 the cost is $39.
Chinese Dumplings with instructors Yulong Wu and Xuemei Li on Wednesday, April 12 from 5-7:30 p.m. at Nobleboro Central School. Dumplings are a traditional and classical food in China, eaten not only as a symbolic food during the Spring Festival but also in daily life as well. Students will learn how to make delicious homemade pork dumplings by hand, and two other Chinese home style dishes. Bring a small containers for leftovers, just in case. Yulong We and Xuemei Li moved from Northeastern China in 2015. Xuemei is a Mandarin Chinese teacher at Lincoln Academy. The fee is $34(inclusive of food costs) if registration is by April 5 using the EARLYBIRD promo code. $39 after April 5.
Solar 101
This workshop, to be held Thursday, April 13 from 6-8 p.m.at Great Salt Bay School, will cover the basics of how Grid Tied solar electric systems combined with mini-split heat pumps use the power of the sun to lower electric bills and reduce home heating/cooling costs. It will also cover key factors in siting and specifying system components as well as additional opportunities for using the electricity generated. Instructor, Chris Toy, an Environmental Studies grad of Bowdoin, Maine teacher and school principal, owns of a 6KW solar array, three heat pumps and one electric hybrid car, will lead the class through a typical proposal and illustrate the cost impact of different system sizes and solar panel choices. Participants should bring their electric bill and questions as there will be opportunity for individual questions and answers. Co-instructor Sam Zuckerman is the owner of Maine Solar Solutions.
