PGC4, a Paul Coulombe LLC, plans to construct a residential pier at the southern tip of Southport to accommodate guests staying at the Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse. Construction will begin on the pier pending an approval of a building permit by the town of Southport.

On March 16, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection initially approved the application to construct a pile-supported fixed pier at 40 Town Landing Road on Southport. The plans include a pier that measures 5 feet wide by 32-feet long, and a 5-foot wide by 50-foot long aluminum runway connected to a 10-foot wide by 20-foot long seasonal float.

The on-site public hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. Southport town officials will determine if the pier adheres to the town’s zoning ordinances and whether or not it presents any adverse effects to the the immediate area.

According to Southport Building Inspector Jim Gagnon, there have been several inquiries into the construction plans, but so far, no serious concerns have been voiced. Gagnon said if the building permit is approved, there will be a 30-day appeal process.

If the pier is approved, one of the conditions is that native plants will be planted within the shoreline zone to prevent erosion, Gagnon said.

Coulombe, a seasonal Southport resident, has hired Knickerbocker Group to oversee the construction of the pier. Danielle Betts, the design manager at Knickerbocker Group, said if the permit is approved, the pier would be completed by this spring.

Betts also said they would be installing submerged utility lines and on-island sewer treatment system within the next few weeks.

The Inn at Cuckolds website states: “The inn will be open for the 2015 season — May 22-September 30.”
