DAR, Pemaquid Chapter: Preparing to celebrate 85 years of service in November

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 10:15am

The Oct. 10 monthly meeting was lively and full of information with 10 members and three guests in attendance. Plans are firming up for next month’s special luncheon, on Saturday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day) to celebrate 85 years of patriotic service in Lincoln County. Thanks to the diligence of Diane Randlett of Southport, this special November meeting will be held in Head Tide at the actual home where the Chapter was officially organized on Nov. 26, 1932. The Pemaquid Chapter has many good deeds and hours of community service to remember and celebrate. Over the years, the Chapter daughters have focused on marking gravestones, cleaning up cemeteries, giving awards to students, donating the American flag, helping Maine veterans, planting trees and placing bronze memorial plaques to honor our historic places, veterans and the Constitution of the United States.

The monthly meeting, usually held in the library of the Lincoln Home in Newcastle, opens with the Pledge of Allegiance, American’s Creed, Preamble to the Constitution and singing of the National Anthem. The Chapter, following the direction of National DAR, is helping veterans, schools and daughters personally affected by the recent hurricanes by sending checks for gift cards to affected areas of the country. Numerous membership applications are in various stages of completion signaling a resurgence of interest in the patriotic services of DAR daughters.

Diane Randlett, Barbara Belknap and Shirley Peverly attended the fall State MSODAR Meeting in Freeport, Sept. 22-24 to share service accomplishments with the other 21 chapters in Maine. A successful fundraising bake sale was held in front of the Yellow Front Grocery Store organized by Jean Hoyenski of Waldoboro with assistance from Melba Gunnison of Boothbay on Saturday, Oct. 7.

An interesting fact has been discovered in recent research. It seems that immediately after its formal organization in November of 1932, the next Chapter meeting be held in December 1932 was to be held at Lincoln Terrace in Newcastle. This is the very same Lincoln Home that the Chapter meets in today!
