District attorney candidate Natasha Irving speaks to Indivisible-Boothbay

Mon, 05/14/2018 - 10:30am

Attorney Natasha Irving of Waldoboro will appear at the monthly meeting of the nonpartisan group Indivisible-Boothbay on Tuesday, May 22, 5-6 p.m. at the Rotary Building, 66 Montgomery Road, Boothbay Harbor.

Irving is a proponent of a Community Based Restorative Justice System, which uses community service and other means instead of incarceration for non-violent offenses. “Allowing these non-violent offenders to engage in restorative justice without the worry of losing a job, and without punishing their family with the loss of wages, will go a long way to preventing these misdemeanors from reoccurring. Just as importantly, restorative justice lowers costs to the taxpayers, freeing our tax dollars to go to other areas of our county budgets.”

Irving is running to become the District Attorney in District #6, which encompasses Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo counties. Many people don’t realize that voters elect their district attorney. Irving believes that the district attorney has the power to shape the district’s approach to law and order, perhaps more than most people realize, and voters need to understand the platform of the D.A. they elect. The issues she is running on are: restorative justice; resources for prosecuting serious offenses; problem-solving courts; medical treatment for those in court due to mental illness and addiction; prosecuting elder abuse; introducing a Veterans’ Court; and improving resources for law enforcement.

Indivisible-Boothbay was formed as an outgrowth of the Women’s March of Jan. 21, 2017. The group meets on a regular basis, sends informative e-newsletters, and sponsors speakers and actions relating to progressive causes. Indivisible-Boothbay encourages active citizenship and engagement in the political process at the local, county, state, and national levels.
