letter to the editor

Don’t be distracted

    Dear Editor:

A recent letter to the Register by Denise Griffin proposes that since there are kids attending Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Schools (the CSD) from other towns (mostly Edgecomb and Southport) whose towns will not support the repair and modernization of our schools, you also should not support this effort.

This is absurd! The CSD schools are suffering from deferred maintenance and additionally need modernization to meet today’s educational standards. We who live in the CSD are responsible for these needs. No other town’s taxpayers can take up these responsibilities.

Yes! We have kids from other towns attending our schools and (by the way) we get well over $1million a year in compensation from the state for them. Perhaps Ms. Griffin would like to see them denied attendance in our CSD. Then we’d lose that revenue. Also, then she could not point to the red herring argument of their presence in her attempt to distract you from the real need; our schools need long-deferred maintenance and educational upgrading for the almost 390 resident kids who attend from our two CSD communities.

Whatever your views on the proposed April 24th bond issue to address these needs, don’t be distracted by attempts to divert your attention from the real issues.
