DRA invites community to help clean up river shoreline

Tue, 05/08/2018 - 10:30am

With alewives, horseshoe crabs, and other migratory species beginning to make their way up the estuary, this is the time of year when wildlife activity on the river picks up significantly. With the health of wildlife as well as humans in mind, Damariscotta River Association (DRA) is organizing a community clean-up along the banks of Damariscotta River estuary.

The clean-up will take place on Saturday, May 19, from noon to 3 p.m. Participants will meet at DRA’s Great Salt Bay Farm on Belvedere Road, Damariscotta to collect bags and get coordinated, and from there will travel to the shore for clean-up. Volunteers may carpool to one or more locations, to be determined.

Participants should bring sturdy work gloves, though DRA will have some vinyl gloves available. All trash can be brought back to DRA for sorting, recycling and transport to the transfer station. To help DRA coordinate, volunteers are asked to register by May 15 by calling 563-1393.
