DRA’s Community Garden offers gardening at its best

After a long winter, there’s nothing more revitalizing than the smell and feel of freshly turned earth and the sight of bright green seedlings pushing up toward the sunlight. For those who lack space or adequate sunlight for a garden at home, Damariscotta River Association (DRA) has plots available for use in the organic Community Garden on Belvedere Road in Damariscotta.

Situated next to the historic farmhouse that serves as DRA’s education center and headquarters, the quarter-acre garden offers sweeping views of the surrounding fields and Great Salt Bay. Plots are approximately 340 square feet each, and receive full southern exposure as well as an almost constant gentle breeze off the bay. Many gardeners return year after year to grow their own food and flowers alongside other community members in this unique and beautiful place.

The plots are organic and pesticide and herbicide free, though pest controls approved by Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association (MOFGA) are permitted. Gardeners are required to abide by the National Organic Standards to ensure that everyone’s produce is chemical-free. A full explanation of these rules is included in DRA’s “Garden Agreement Form” which outlines the responsibilities of all gardeners.

DRA keeps an assortment of hand tools in its garden shed reserved for use in the gardens. Rationed water and hoses are available onsite, as are mulch grass and leaves. DRA also offers a good selection of educational resources on gardening.

Plots are available annually for a fee of $25 each. In addition, gardeners commit to volunteering two hours of time in the garden over the course of the summer to keep the commonly shared elements of the garden, like the paths and the tool shed, in good condition.
