Early birds won’t go hungry in Wiscasset

Tue, 11/10/2015 - 7:15am

Miss Wiscasset Diner co-owners Mark Suarez and Robert Harris expect some of their first customers Saturday morning, Nov. 14, will be women wanting a good meal to shop on.

There will also be men looking for a meal because their wives didn’t cook, so they could make the sales, the two men predicted.

The Wiscasset Early Bird Sale is Saturday. Several businesses are opening before dawn and cutting prices for the pajama-clad and others.

Whoever comes to the diner at 762 Bath Road from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. will get 15 percent off their breakfast order. It’s Harris’s and Suarez’s first time taking part in the Wiscasset Early Bird Sale, one day after their first Thursday and Friday rounds of opening the diner for dinner.

Business slows down without the tourists, but people have been asking for the addition of dinner hours, so they are trying it, starting Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Harris and Suarez said.

Inside the kitchen Monday, chef James Murray had corned beef hash on the grill. It had been slow-roasted, he said.

Downtown, at 45 Water Street, Sarah’s Cafe has rejoined the Early Bird in a big way after taking recent years off from it. “We’ve decided to open the doors,” owner Sarah Heald said with enthusiasm Tuesday. The return features a brunch buffet for $3, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Look for French toast with Maine maple syrup, along with fresh fruit, hot chocolate, cider and much more. The restaurant’s mini Bloody Mary is available separately, for $2, Heald said.

Asked about the buffet’s low price, Heald said the restaurant wanted to offer it as a shopper’s pick-me-up. “Happy holidays from Sarah’s,” she said.

Also during Sarah’s four-hour Early Bird block, get a $50 gift certificate for $40.

At Ames Supply, 447 Bath Road, doughnut holes will once again be part of shoppers’ Early Bird experience. Non-sale items will be 10 percent off from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday.

“Hopefully we’ll have good weather and get lots of people, and no snow storm,” co-owner Wayne Averill said.

Outdoor grills may not be the most obvious buy heading into a Maine winter, but people buy them there all year round, Averill said. Several were on the floor Monday, with next year’s grills expected soon.

The Early Bird Sale comes ahead of the store’s Dec. 5 Christmas Spectacular featuring sales, gift-wrapping and more.

Don’t leave home without your coffee mug Saturday. Stop by Treats, 80 Main Street, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and get a free cup of coffee if you bring your own mug. Wine, cheese, ground coffee beans in bulk, specialty items and everything else, except newspapers, Bridgewater pottery from England and the baked goods that Treats makes from scratch, will be 20 percent off from 6 a.m.  to 7 a.m., and 15 percent off from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., owner Stacy Linehan said.

“People should come in and get wine for the holidays, wine for Thanksgiving,” Linehan said Monday. “At 20 percent off, that’s a great deal.” Wine brands include Foris and Spann, which Linehan said is an amazing company.

“Usually theirs ... are $30 bottles of wine, so if you could get 20 percent off, that’s a good deal.”

This year’s Early Bird comes as Linehan starts to look ahead to how the business will celebrate its 10th anniversary in January. It will probably revolve around the number 10, she said.

If you want the best deals at DebraElizabeth’s, 78 Main Street, get up extra early and wear your pajamas. A robe is also accceptable, owner Deb Schaffer said.

From 5:30 a.m to 6 a.m. only, pajamas or a robe will get the wearer 40 percent off items that cost $10 or more. The special half-hour is cash or check only.

From 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the store, the discount drops to 25 percent off items at least $10; but you can switch to the day clothes and use the credit card. Shopping from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. is still good for 20 percent off items of $10 or more.

Gift certificates and Baggallini items are not part of the Early Bird price break at DebraElizabeth’s. For more on the Wiscasset Early Bird sale, visit our Holiday Spectacular 2015 page at www.wiscassetnewspaper.com.
