Despite the adage, there was smoke but no fire when first responders arrived at 61 McKown Point Road in Boothbay Harbor Oct. 30 around 3 p.m.

Fire Chief Nick Upham said the inside of the building was filled with smoke on the second floor. He said it smelled like rubber, and he thought it was likely from a heating system belt. After shutting off the furnace, responders investigated the building but found no active fire, according to Upham. He said there were no injuries.

In total, around 30 responders arrived from the Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay and Southport fire departments and Boothbay Region EMS, according to Upham.

The call lasted less than an hour and a half.
