Four passengers rescued after Lazy Jack, lobster boat collide

    Four passengers were rescued Wednesday afternoon after a lobster boat collided with a local chartered schooner near Tumbler Island.

    The Lazy Jack, a 48-foot schooner, was struck in its stern and sustained substantial damage, according to Sea Tow boat Captain Amy Armstrong, who responded to the distress call shortly after 1 p.m.

    Armstrong transported all four Lazy Jack passengers to shore. 

    “No one was badly hurt, but they were all pretty shaken up,” Armstrong said.

    The Lazy Jack didn’t appear to be taking on water and returned to shore under its own power, according to Armstrong.

    “It stayed above the water line even though the transom was ripped off,” she said.

    The captain received the mayday call around 1:06 p.m. The distress call inaccurately reported that the accident occurred near Squirrel Island. Armstrong was close to the scene and responded.

    “We scooted over there and went beside it, and got the four passengers on to the Sea Tow and brought them in,” Armstrong said.

    The U.S. Coast Guard will provide more details later this afternoon.
