Garden Club member to present on using unusual containers for displaying plants

Sat, 03/02/2024 - 8:30am

Boothbay Region Garden Club member Sandy Leonard will be presenting an “outside the box” program that focuses on creative use of unusual containers to hold and display plants and plant materials. Members of the public are invited to bring their own unusual containers to the program: flat, tall, wide or whatever sparks your imagination! The club will provide plant material and a few of the “stem holders” used in Ikebana; the Japanese art of flower arranging. The presentation will take place at the club’s next monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church (32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor).  Pizza, salad and desserts will be served!

A Maine native, Sandy holds a B.A in English from the University of Maine and continued her studies at Colgate University. Sandy began Ikebana studies while living in Tokyo, Japan. According to Sandy, "Just when I thought my in-class design was perfect, our instructor would stop by and remove about half of the plant material. She was right, of course, and that's how I learned the most important lesson in Ikebana: let the plant material speak and pay attention to what it has to say."

Sandy is a National Garden Club Master Accredited Judge, and holds a Level One certificate from the Ichiyo School of Ikebana in Tokyo. She is also a warm, kind and creative instructor eager to share her love of plants and their beauty.
