Garden Club at work

Dear Editor:

When reading the recent article about the Paul Coulombe’s vision for the Boothbay Common, I was struck by the reference to the work done by the Boothbay Civic Association. The Association does an outstanding job for Boothbay. However, I would like Mr. Coulombe and others who are not aware of a club that works very hard at the Armillary, the Butterfly garden, the Gazebo, the Civil War Monument and the Blue Star Memorial Garden.

Recognition should go to the Boothbay Region Garden Club’s Civic Development Committee, which has for years, planted, weeded and maintained the gardens that are on full view as one enters the Boothbay Common area. Each year, club members plant annuals, dig and divide perennials, and add bulbs and shrubs to enhance these gardens. The Butterfly garden has been completely re-planted to encourage pollinators to visit. Through the summer, at least once a week members can be seen weeding and deadheading the gardens. These same members gather in the fall to “put the gardens to bed” for the following year. In the spring, members can be seen at the Gazebo planting window boxes that are displayed at public buildings in the Boothbay region. In November, Christmas wreaths are decorated and delivered to those same public buildings for the holidays.

This Civic Development Committee is very active and continues to plan and work on these beautiful gardens for our residents and visitors to enjoy but is only one of the many committees of the Boothbay Region Garden Club. Our Conservation Pledge is to “Protect and conserve the natural resources of the planet earth and promise to promote education so we may be caretakers of our air, water, forests, land and wildlife.”
