Girls tennis continues winning ways

The Boothbay Region High School girls tennis team have hit the homestretch of the regular season, notching three more wins to improve its record to 7-4.

The Lady Seahawks have closed in on the end of season with victories over Mountain Valley, Monmouth and Madison high schools.

Over the course of a short four-week season, the Lady Seahawks have honed their skills on the service and net game to secure a berth in the Western Maine Class C playoffs.

“We have looked pretty good the last couple matches. We have served well and have started volleying very well at the net,” said Boothbay Coach Alex Arsenault. “We have played everyone in the line up this year so far, so I consider that a success.”

Boothbay will finish the regular season on Wednesday, May 20 at 4 p.m. when the Lady Seahawks will try to avenge their early season loss against the higher ranked Carrabec Cobras. The outcome of the match will determine what team Boothbay will face in the first round of postseason, which starts June 4.

Last weekend, Boothbay’s junior tri-captains also competed in the state qualifying singles tournament at Mt. Ararat. Boothbay’s first singles Mackenzie Colby beat the second singles player from Messalonskee High School and the first singles player from Lawrence Academy, but lost to the first singles for Mt. Ararat, who was ranked fourth in the tournament.

Boothbay’s third singles Anna Baumm and second singles Angela Machon lost in the first round of the tournament, however all three captains will return for the Lady Seahawks next year, giving Boothbay a boost in experience in skill, Arsenault said.

In the next couple weeks, Arsenault said he plans to focus on getting his team more consistent by improving their positioning on the court and hitting a lot of tennis balls.

“We have a good chance at making a run at Western Maine Championships if we can reach our potential,” Arsenault said.

Boothbay is currently ranked sixth place in the Heal point standings.
