Gold/Smith features art by local physician

Wed, 06/18/2014 - 2:00pm

From July 1 through July 30, get ready for a great exhibit at Gold/Smith Gallery.

The gallery will be featuring the constructions in wood and paint by Andy Benoit. The sculptures are recycled from the district recycling center, a.k.a., the dump. Benoit puts his own spin on things with his keen eye for form and color the way nobody else we’ve seen can do it. He has had a one-man exhibit at Bowdoin College, is very well-known as a physician in the Boothbay region for decades and it is his second exhibit at Gold/Smith Gallery.

The wall pieces are joyous and ebullient with the pleasures of seaside living. There’s a sign in a shop window in town that reads something like “Heaven is a little closer in a home on the water,” but we think these marvelous works of art are heavenly and in anyone’s home will bring them that feeling without the hefty tax bills.

There will be a reception for the artist Saturday July 12 at the gallery from 4 to 7 p.m. Everyone should come. Benoit will be on hand to share his adventures scavenging and creating here on the wonderful Maine Coast.

For more information, the gallery can be reached at 207-633-6252. The gallery is located at 41 Commercial St., Boothbay Harbor and is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sundays are by chance or appointment.
