An exhibition of handmade dioramas built by Vietnam Marine Corps veteran Ed Strausberg will be on display through the end of June at The Good Supply in Pemaquid.

The public is invited to join the artist at a reception to be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22 at The Good Supply’s post and beam storefront. The exhibit is designed to open during Memorial Day weekend and span Flag Day and Father’s Day.

Strausberg, a Bristol Mills resident, meticulously depicts battle scenes from the Korean War and World War II. Using images found in history books for inspiration, Strausberg creates his dioramas to further educate the public about the perils of war.

His work has been shown at the West Point Museum and the Naval War College among other reputed institutions.

Strausberg would like to see his models traveling to schools and libraries to inspire children specifically, but also the general public, to study history. In fact, Strausberg began building models at the age of eight after seeing Revolutionary War dioramas during a class trip.

Being able to see a moment in history — a place and time with real people — in three dimensions allowed him to relate war and military service in a new way.

“We should always think twice before sending our troops into harms way, and make sure that’s the only option,” said Strausberg. “I generally build these dioramas to remind us of what it takes to make war — the people who serve and the people who actually fight the war.”

The Good Supply, known for promoting the work of local artisans, will open for a fourth season on May 20. Strausberg’s models will be available for viewing starting opening day and running through the end of June.

The business storefront is located in The Good Supply barn at 2106 Bristol Road in Pemaquid Falls. Store hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
