Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District

Great Garden Raffle promotes soil health and supports conservation education

Tue, 09/16/2014 - 3:00pm

Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District is holding a Great Garden Raffle from now through Nov. 5, 2014 to support its education programs.

First prize is a Valley Oaks Broad Fork donated by Fedco Seeds ($215 value). Second prize is a Tub-Trug kit donated by Johnny’s Selected Seeds ($100 value); and last, but not least, third prize is a $25 certificate to the Knox-Lincoln Conservation Spring Plant Sale on May 2 and 3, 2015.

Broad forks are the latest rage in gardening. With a broad fork, a gardener can loosen and aerate garden soil without mixing up the layers, confusing soil biota, and destroying soil structure. The Valley Oaks broad fork is 18-inches wide with five 12-inch steel tines that break up compacted soil more deeply than a rototiller, and two replaceable 48-inch hardwood post-hole digger handles. This tool is built to last.

Johnny’s Tub-Trug Kit is a great collection of must-have gardening accessories, including a medium sized pistachio tub-trug, a Johnny’s baseball cap, one pair of West Country Garden Gloves, a 3-tine hand cultivator, and 4 packets of Johnny’s seeds.

The $25 Plant Sale gift certificate may be used for pre-order or cash and carry purchases of bare-root fruit trees, berry bushes, conifers, native deciduous trees and shrubs, organically grown native perennials — and anything else on the K-L Conservation Plant Sale list.

Tickets are only $2 each or 3 for $5! Stop by to see the prizes and get your lucky tickets at the district office, 893 West St, Rockport. Tickets are also available at Terra Optima Farm Market, 218 S Main St, Rockland and Spear Farm Stand, 1520 Atlantic Highway, Waldoboro, by contacting Hildy at 207-596-2040 or hildy@knox-lincoln.org, or for purchase online at www.knox-lincoln.org/2014-raffle. Drawing will be held at the Knox-Lincoln Annual Awards Banquet on Nov. 5. Winners need not be present.
