Thanks for making a difference. That was the sentiment that came through loud and clear at the Volunteer Appreciation Tea organized by the residents and staff at the St. Andrews Gregory Wing on April 17. The tea was attended by 24 of the over 50 volunteers who give freely of their time and energy to help lift the hearts and lighten the load of those who live and those who work in the Gregory Wing.

Volunteers provide one to one visits, pet therapy, lay pastoral and church services and office support. They help with group activities like bingo, pizza parlor and warm cookie day, garden therapy, body/brain fitness and the staging of various socials. They assist residents with the Music and Memory program and write up life stories. They lend a hand for road trips and music events and do whatever is asked whenever and wherever help is needed. According to Jerie Phinney, Gregory Wing and Zimmerli Pavilion activities director, the dedicated group of volunteers at the Gregory Wing play an essential role in helping to provide a good quality of life for residents year round.

So, on April 17, after weeks of careful preparation, the residents of the Gregory Wing held a very special event to show their appreciation. Homemade and hand addressed (by a resident) invitations, live "Johnny Jump Up" May baskets planted, decorated and handed out by residents, and applause as each volunteer came forward to receive their gifts, were all tangible signs that the Gregory Wing residents were very eager to show their gratitude. Those who could, also took part in setting up tables and cleaning up after the tea --- all activities which also help the residents feel involved and connected.

Dining services provided a delicious array of colorful petit fours and platters of fresh fruit to accompany the charming assortment of teapots on each table making it a cheery and out of the ordinary affair for the volunteers and residents alike. Behind the scenes, maintenance, housekeeping and laundry did their part to prepare the room and the tables so that all was perfect for the event.

LincolnHealth Volunteer Services provided service award certificates and key rings for each volunteer embossed with the words," thanks for making a difference." Steve Hurd from LincolnHealth and Barbara Marr from the Village were also on hand to welcome guests, keep the teapots full and express their thanks to the volunteers.

Reports are that a good time was had by all!
