Several new students came with a parent or two to the YMCA Annex in Boothbay Harbor on Aug. 28 to get a feel for what their new Montessori school will be like.

The Harbor Montessori School, which according to Child Enrichment Center Director Maddie Rideout has been in the works for two and a half years, will begin classes Sept. 2.

“We held an open house for parents last night (Aug. 27), and today is an introductory day for the parents and students,” Rideout said.

There are 21 students, the program's limit, between the ages of three and six signed up. New enrollment will begin in the fall for next year, and there's a waiting list now.

Alexandra Pinkham, head teacher at the school, grew up in Edgecomb and has taught at Maplewood Montessori in Portland for the last four years.

Pinkham said she pushed to get the new school in Boothbay Harbor up and running.

Helping her will be assistant teachers Lara Mann and Betsy Pitcher.

The Montessori method of teaching promotes independence, and focuses on individuals so that they may work at their own pace.

On Aug. 28 the overall mood in the two rooms in the YMCA Annex was optimistic. Teachers, students and parents mingled and all seemed to be looking forward to the new Montessori school in Boothbay Harbor.
