David and Nancy Smith of Clinton, proprietors of David's Custom Woodworking have been married 39 years.

For the last four years, they have been traveling all over Maine to set up at craft fairs such as the Fall Foliage Festival that took place on Oct. 11 and 12. David Smith makes cutting boards and guitars, while Nancy Smith makes quilted purses.

Nancy Smith retired in 2003, and started making her purses for fun. Before she knew it, all her friends and family members had one.

“I've always liked making quilts, and these are similar but smaller and more detailed,” Nancy Smith said. “Each of my purses has a lining and a matching wallet that fits perfectly. There are pockets on the inside and often one on the outside as well.”

David Smith, who has played guitar for over 50 years, just recently got into making the instruments in 2009. According to Nancy, creating just a single guitar from scratch takes over 100 hours. David also builds guitars for kids from kits, which are much less expensive to buy but still produce a good-quality guitar.

“It's much harder to play a cheap guitar,” David Smith said. “The sound doesn't play right because the instrument isn't built right.”

He builds six or seven guitars a year, and they always sell out, according to Nancy Smith.

David Smith also makes wooden cutting boards and lazy Susans, which he coats with walnut oil, creating a food safe finish.

Nancy and David Smith both use materials from Maine to create their crafts. David uses only native Maine woods in his work, while Nancy gets as much of her fabric as possible from Marden's.

“We like keeping the money we spend in Maine,” Nancy said. “We think of this as a hobby more than a business because we enjoy doing it so much, and any money we make goes right back into it.”

The Smith's attend craft fairs all during the year, and can often be found on the Boothbay Common during the summer craft weekends. They can be reached at davidnancy35@msn.com.
