River Arts in Damariscotta invites the public to view a solo exhibition from Sept. 24 through Oct 7by Jan Roberson, a pastel artist from Harpswell.

Living on Quahog Bay, Robeson experiences the sights and sounds of the sea and sky through all the seasons and the marvelous changes of the year. While the water is predominant in many paintings, she often incorporates different kinds of boats like dories, skiffs, kayaks, lobster boats, etc., docks and shoreline outbuildings.

She also loves the woods that surround her place and captures the changing scenes at various times of the day amongst the trees, often those that have shed their leaves so that the structure of the tree is visible. Roberson feels that in following the bends and twists of the trunks and limbs, one can fully appreciate the measure of the tree. The majestic fir and pine add color in winter and help to give form beside the glittering white snow and dark shadows.

Roberson has been accepted into national pastel shows in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Learn more about the artist, and view her work at www.janroberson.com.

After retiring from a 30-year teaching career, Roberson went back to school and got her BFA in Painting from USM in 2005. She studied pastels in St. Petersburg, Russia with internationally acclaimed artist Serguei Oussik. In this country, she has studied with Robert Carsten, Lorenzo Chavez, Richard McKinley and Sean Dye.
