Jewett breaks ground on Southport age qualified housing

Ed Jewett of Southport has broken ground on the long anticipated age qualified housing project in Southport.

The project, which has been under consideration for four years, was recently made possible by a water line extension of the Boothbay Region Water District.

Consisting of six cottage style one floor residences with two bedrooms and two baths each, the development is in a cluster configuration. All cottages will have similar maintenance free exterior features with compatible color schemes. Each cottage will have a front porch to encourage interaction between residents in a neighborhood setting. The project will be called Captains' Way to honor the several sea captains in the Farmer family from whom the parcel was purchased.

The project was originally conceived as a housing solution for senior Southport residents who wished to stay on the island after having to move away from older high maintenance  homes. The idea was endorsed by the Southport community after considering the cluster concept and required zoning modifications.

All homes will belong to a home owners association which will be responsible for all lawn  mowing, snow plowing and other related grounds maintenance. Residents will need to be 55 years of age to qualify. Nearly five acres of land will be maintained as a natural woodland for the enjoyment of the residents.

Jewett has over 45 years experience in the construction industry and was the founder of Jewett Construction in New Hampshire, a 40-year-old general contractor now run by a family member. He has considerable experience as builder and owner of senior housing and formerly owned an assisted living facility in New Hampshire.
