The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library welcomes the photographic artistry of Joe Orchulli II for the month of August.

In January of 1990, Orchulli move from Pennsylvania to the Boothbay region, with a desire to photograph the Maine coast.

He resided in what he calls "a small, uninsulated, frozen cottage, one mile from Ocean Point.” Orchulli pulled into the snow covered driveway of the cottage, on the corner of the Royall and Ocean Point roads in East Boothbay, at 3 a.m. and walked in. But, when he saw the tiny, uninsulated dwelling place was without heat or plumbing, Orchulli almost walked right back out the door to drive back to Pennsylvania.

A ride out to Ocean Point the next morning quickly changed his mind.

After bringing in a photograph for Boothbay Register Editor Kevin Burnham, Orchulli was invited to be a photographer and writer for the paper. He worked at the Register in 1998 and 2005 to 2011. While working for the paper, he went on to receive numerous awards from the Maine Press Association and the New England Press and Newspaper Association for his photography.

Orchulli fell in love with sailing after experiencing his “first sailboat ride ever” on the 125-foot, three-masted topsail schooner, Alexandria. He then became crew aboard the Ladyship and Bay Lady friendship sloops, although he is best known for his adventures and photography aboard the Bounty.

Also a professional singer/songwriter, Orchulli will perform a musical concert on the library lawn, Friday, Aug. 7, from 3-4 p.m., playing a variety of music including his own original compositions and selections from John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot and others. The public is invited to bring a chair or blanket, kick back and enjoy this talented musician and songwriter.

The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library will host Orchulli as its August “Artist of the Month” where his photographs will be exhibited Aug. 1-29. The photographic display will include scenic photographs from the Boothbay region and images captured while living in the tropical paradise of Venice, Florida, where he presently lives.
