June Stockus-Stevens

Fri, 03/23/2018 - 2:00pm

June Stockus-Stevens died peacefully at Miles Hospital on March 20, 2018 after battling pancreatic cancer.

June Althea Stockus was born in Canton Massachusetts on June 19, 1955. She was the last of six children born to Winifred and “Gus” Stockus.

She attended Canton High and was a standout swimmer, holding several team records for many years. She was a charter member of the BUC and developed lifelong friendship with Lynn, Mary, Lou, Joanne and Lassie. She attended Massachusetts College of Art and received her BFA in illustration. She worked at Rustcraft greeting cards for several years until they moved to Pennsylvania, and she stayed in Massachusetts to marry her physical therapist, Jim.

She had her first child Jason (a case of the flu) in 1984, followed by her planned child Jaclyn in 1990, who they adopted from South Korea. She enjoyed every minute of being a Mom, spending countless hours with the kids on picnic wagon walks to town, and later, in many, many, long swim meets. It was at these swim meets that she made a connection with her best friend, Eileen, sharing many adventures, laughs, and much love.

She started working at Boothbay Region Elementary School as a substitute and was quickly asked to be full time, landing in the 5-6 Resource Room. A very appropriate place for a left hand dyslectic who was constantly flipping numbers. She enjoyed sharing her rather loud and passionate love of reading with students and staff alike. June made many wonderful friends at the school many helping with her care until the end.

When not at work, June spent most of her time walking, or on West Harbor Pond, swimming and paddle-boarding with her family and beloved dog Jamaica; or simply watching the sun go down with Jim.

June leaves a large extended family: husband Jim Stevens; son, Jason Stockus Stevens and his wife Katherine Stevens; daughter, Jaclyn Park Macomber and her husband Travis Macomber; her brothers, Arthur Stockus and his wife Sandy and Peter Stockus and his wife Eileen; sisters, Carolyn Harrington and her husband Bob, Kathy Wiberg and her husband Ron, and Paula and her husband Harry. She also has many nephews and nieces that she took great joy in following their adventures.

June possessed a huge compassionate heart that was always open to those in need; her childlike joy and contagious laugh will be sorely missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556 or the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund.

A private celebration of her life will be held in the summer.
