Juniper and McKown Points Column: Welcome Back Reception and more

Tue, 06/19/2018 - 11:30am

Here comes summer 2018 and the first column of the season for McKown and Juniper Points. For many years our now retired columnist Helene Barnes welcomed us back with reports of glorious June weather and more and more cottage lights burning in the evening. It’s true, for those of you who haven’t arrived yet, there have been many blue sky days and, judging by foot traffic passing by Firefly, folks are arriving.

So, let’s get started with what you need to know: the Welcome Back Reception is this Saturday night, June 23, 6 p.m. at the Community House. You know the drill: BYOB and bring an appetizer to share. Plastic cups and ice will be provided. Come by and you can be among the first to pick up the 2018 JPVIS membership list and the summer schedule to hang on your kitchen wall.

Ann Swope, the new “Bunny,” i.e. chair, for the Lobster Bake, will have your tickets ready to pick up at the reception if you have already paid, or bring cash or a check and you can buy your tickets that evening. Unlike the local restaurants which have a “market price” for lobster, ours is still $20 for the lobster dinner, $5 for the hot dog option.

Please note that the lobster bake is Saturday, July 7th, 5 p.m. in Whitten’s field.

The tennis courts are in play; contact Andy Matthews for men’s round robin and Kristen Gray to join in with the ladies’ round robin. Our tennis pro Dave Taylor will be here in time for the reception and you can talk tennis, or anything else, with him that evening.

There will be a lot more announcements and news to come and comings and goings to report in this column. For now, send me what you know, or what you want to know, and I’ll track it down and get it reported accurately. As summer goes on, we hope to have some guest reporters.

    See you this Saturday!
