Juniper/McKown Point Column: Annual meeting, tennis and more

Tue, 08/01/2017 - 11:45am

Let’s start right off with good news: Dave and Becky (along with their three daughters, of course) have announced that they will be returning for the 2018 tennis season. A big sigh of relief both on and off the courts.

The Annual Meeting last Saturday was ably wrapped up within an hour by President Jon Sylvester (no filibuster worthy topics this year) with all positive accomplishments reported by the officers and committees. Thanked for their hard work on behalf of JPVIS were Bunny Gagne, stepping down as Lobster Bake chair, Ted Repa who was presented a golden pruner for his work as Grounds chair and Helene Barnes, who retired as our Boothbay Register correspondent after many years.Bunny presented the lobster tiara to the new Lobster Bake chair, Ann Swope.Robert Moser will become the new Grounds chair. Betty Repa stepped down as Member at-Large and will be replaced by Bunny Gagne. Incoming President Jose McComiskey thanked Jon warmly for his two year term and presented him with a gift that looked suspiciously like something that might make him forget the travails of the presidency for an evening or two.

JPVIS should take pride in the Manley Reed Scholarship fund which this year has increased to $42,210 thanks to prudent investing by the Boothbay Region Scholarship Fund. A scholarship was made this year to a student starting technical college, keeping with the mission of our fund.

The Ladies lunch had slightly less attendance than the annual meeting and may have to be reconsidered.Even though, every year there is a recipe worth noting down, like Ann Swope’s couscous salad.Nancy Nyberg graciously gave credit for her fabulous guacamole to her husband David and the desserts this year were worth all the calories.

This coming Saturday Aug.5 is the JPVIS annual Berries & Cream Exhibition Tennis Match, with Dave Taylor and assistant pro Susan Kirby taking on returning visiting pros Blake and Jeff.Tennis will begin at 9:30 to take advantage of shade on the court for spectators. We are looking for volunteers to help on the morning of the event. If you make a mean waffle, please contact Emily Whiting to join the kitchen crew.Saturday will also kick off the annual Club Tournament.Calling all men, women, and junior players -- singles or doubles -- to compete for the club championship title. If you are interested in playing, please contact Dave Taylor or Barb Gray.

A big thank you to Dave Peterson for providing the trophies each year. They are always beautiful and worth playing to win!

Dave Taylor reports on Junior Tennis: The Junior Tennis Team will travel to Squirrel Island on Aug. 8 to play against Christmas Cove, Squirrel Island, and BHYC in a team tournament. It will be the grand finale of the junior interclub season!

Gus McGee was the big winner at our annual Dolphin Mini Golf night on Tuesday, July 25 shooting a remarkable 42 with 2 hole in ones on the first four holes.

Tennis clinics and lessons will run through Aug. 25 so come and out and enjoy some great August tennis at JPVIS.Contact Dave Taylor at 860-655-3062 for details.

JPVIS will hold an Open House on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 1-4 p.m. for anyone in the Boothbay area interested in seeing all the activities we offer. More information about this outreach effort will be sent to members soon.

“Tell your story” night will come back in August by popular demand. Are you willing to open your living room or porch on Wednesday, Aug. 16 for a couple of hours in the evening for this event? If so, please contact Jose McComiskey.

This is a special week for the Hanley Family.Tom, Kathy, Megan and Sean were joined by Sean’s fiancée Katie’s family, The Flemings from Mahopac, N.Y., for a week of merriment at the Helm cottage. They will gather on Monhegan Island where Sean and Katie will exchange vows, followed by a small civil ceremony at the Boothbay Harbor Town Offices in keeping with a tradition of BBH weddings in the family. Sean and Katie are following in the footsteps of his grandparents (Dean and Bette Helm) and parents (Tom and Kathy.) Congratulations!

Want to do something really fun that will make you feel virtuous? Paddle out to Burnt Island on Sunday for breakfast to support the Lighthouse restoration fund. Your correspondent and partner Horst made their way in kayaks from the Aquarium boat ramp with Horst’s visiting son, daughter-in-law and his two teenage granddaughters. We made the crossing in 25 minutes and were rewarded with really good pancakes, sausage, coffee, watermelon. All for $10 a person and getting up and over there by 9. Do it.

I’ll be your correspondent next week. Get me some news or I’ll make something up.
