Let the games begin

Wed, 01/04/2017 - 9:15am

Besides the NCAA's "March Madness," the National Football League playoffs are my favorite sporting events to watch from my recliner. There are four games this weekend — two on Saturday and two on Sunday. God willing, I will be able to see three games in their entirety and maybe the final quarter of Saturday's first game after returning from my granddaughter's swim meet in Portland.

As always, or at least since 2002, I will be rooting for another New England Patriots Super Bowl victory. A win this year would be extra sweet since I totally disagree that Tom Brady should have been suspended for four games. If NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has to hand the Lombardi trophy to Brady, wouldn't it be cool if Brady accepted it, with a cloth in hand, and said "Let me first wipe the slime off this beautiful trophy before I accept it on behalf of the New England Patriots organization — winner of five Super Bowls in 15 years!"

Not one to count my chickens before they hatch — I do think the Patriots are playing well right now but the Steelers and the Chiefs will not be easy foes to defeat, even if the game is in Foxborough. And if the Patriots get to the Super Bowl, it's a toss-up on who they will play — Will there be another Giants miracle run? Are the Cowboys for real? Are the Packers on a roll? Will Atlanta outscore all of their playoff opponents? And don’t forget Seattle — a veteran playoff team of late!

That's why we love the NFL. Let’s play some football. Loser, go home.
