The Lincoln Home hosts special guest artist Liliana Thelander in our living room Friday, Sept. 16 from 4-7 p.m. during the Twin Villages ARTWALK. Liliana Thelander, born in Caracas, Venezuela, started her art career with stained glass. She had the desire to improve her ability to draw and design her own stained glass patterns. While taking drawing classes, she discovered a whole new side of art. Drawing lessons led to painting, opening up a new world of color and observation.
Liliana shares, "Stained glass was my first exposure to creating art. I was fascinated with the way the light comes through, making the colors radiant, like a prism. I am drawn to subjects I paint by the same luminous quality of light and hue. As I paint, poetry happens in the choice of color and arrangement of objects. I love to closely examine and am fascinated with marbles, bottles, eyes, glass, old boxes, birds and objects that are part of our everyday living.
“Working with oils allows me to render subjects in vivid colors by applying layers of glazes creating the illusion of depth,” Liliana continued. “My detailed renditions invite the viewer in for a closer look. My intent with my paintings is to go beyond realism, bringing life and vibrancy to everyday objects and snapshots in time."
Liliana’s contemporary realistic style of painting strives to build form and create mood by emphasizing atmosphere with a dramatic use of light. Her paintings are meant to be enjoyed at a distance and close up where they are filled with nuances. She uses oils to make her paintings come to life, with a natural eye for detail, and a keen observation of light and color. Her subjects are inspired by moments in family life, weathered objects like bottles, toys or boxes, Maine scenery, the arrangements of fruits, vegetables and flowers at Farmer’s markets, suggesting a work of art in need to be painted.
Her work has been exhibited at Summer Island Studio in Brunswick, the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset, the Boothbay Region Art Foundation, the Tidemark Gallery in Waldoboro, the TIME Gallery in Portland, River Arts in Damariscotta, in the Damariscotta River Grill, the Visitor’s Center of the National Audubon Society’s Project Puffin in Rockland, the Merrymeeting Arts Center in Bowdoinham.
She is represented by Mast Cove Galleries in Kennebunkport, Lincolnville Fine Art Gallery in Lincolnville, Pemaquid Art Gallery in New Harbor, Landing Gallery in Rockland, and Stable on Front Gallery in Bath. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and The International Guild of Realism.
Liliana has offered to donate 25 percent of the proceeds from purchased works to Lincoln Home Resident Financial Assistance Fund. The Lincoln Home, a non-profit, takes no state monies of any kind but endeavors to provide assistance to those who need help.
