She has hardly stopped moving since graduating from Boothbay Region High School nearly 20 years ago. And she’s not stopping yet.

Lisa Arsenault, salutatorian of the BRHS class of 1999, will be leaving the country about three weeks after she serves as the guest speaker at the BRHS Alumni Banquet on Sunday, June 3 at 6 p.m. at Boothbay Region Elementary School.

And she’s not just moving — she’s getting married.

Arsenault, currently a seventh grade teacher at BRES, met her future husband, Lee Martin, when he was in East Boothbay while the boat he works on was being serviced at Hodgdon Yachts. Martin hails from Ipswich, England and that’s where he and Lisa will be settling down as husband and wife in a few months.

“The plans were made for us to leave on June 25 – a date that had to be met because of the wedding plans – so with the number of school make-up days piling up here, I was getting a little nervous. School is now getting out on June 20,” said Arsenault.

After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with an English/journalism degree, Arsenault went to work as a newspaper reporter in Massachusetts and New Hampshire from 2003 to 2007. After earning a teaching license in Colorado in 2008, she taught English and other courses in that state at a junior/senior high school beginning that year. After a one-year teaching stint at a junior high in Virginia in 2011-2012, she moved back to Colorado to teach at her former school until 2014. She returned to Boothbay in 2014 and spent a year working at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library before taking the teaching job at BRES in 2015.

“I really liked the job at the library, especially working with Mary Pinkham (now retired),” said Arsenault. “But when the elementary school job opened up, I worked to get my state of Maine teaching certificate and I’ve been here ever since.”

Once settled in England, Arsenault wants to continue teaching. While at BRES, besides teaching, Arsenault has served as a guide runner for a vision-impaired student so he could compete in cross-country and track.

Arsenault is excited about speaking at the banquet. Her father, Gary, spoke at the banquet a few years back.

“I don’t know what my speech will be about,” said Arsenault on May 9. “But I’m working on it.”
