River Arts Center in Damariscotta

Local artists present Maine inspired works

Sat, 06/21/2014 - 1:00pm

Three Maine artists will unite for a Maine inspired show at River Arts Center in Damariscotta July 18-31. The exhibit will feature local scenes interpreted in photography, pen and ink drawings, acrylic painting, and wood sculpture, offering a variety of topics from the thick Maine woods to the sparking waters.

Angie Blevins, of New Sharon, Lee Cheever of Harpswell and Janet Glatz of Durham will share their Maine visions of “Woods to Water” in the West Gallery of River Arts Center on Route 1. The artists will be available for a meet and greet reception on opening night, which coincides with the Twin Villages Art Walk of Damariscotta and Newcastle. Hours for the reception are from 4-8 p.m. As a special feature, there will be a gift certificate drawing applicable to a work of choice for attendees.

Glatz’s brand of realistic acrylic painting is a combination of conveying emotion and a sense of finding oneself within her work. Relying on dramatic light and shadow combined with rich color and accurate detail, she infuses her work with the sense of wonder that she felt when first witnessing or envisioning the scene.

Blevins has enjoyed living in Maine for more than 20 years; working out of a quiet, bright studio in the woods in of rural Maine, where she discovers year-round inspiration. She attended commercial art school, and has specialized in working with oil, ink, and pencil for the past three decades.

Cheever is a multifaceted artist living in Harpswell. Her drawings, sculpture, photographs and paintings reflect both her knowledge of the fundamentals of art and design and her belief in the creative human spirit. An avid traveler, Lee brings a wide range of history and culture to her work. This show will spotlight her photography, and fish and bird sculptures.

“We want to share this beautiful state interpreted with our expressive art,” Cheever said. “Art provides a unique and personal momento of a great vacation or a special moment in someone’s life. It is more than an object on a wall; the creation of the work and the purchase bring together two stories. We offer what we see and feel to share with the viewer. We want them to fall in love.”
